Church Bulletin - 12/01/16

Christ the Savior celebrates the creation of a Church Parish Council and formal adoption of Bylaws based on a Parish Meeting held after Services on November 13. Elected to Serve were: Chris Maas (President and Treasurer), Joan Proudman (Vice-President), Lisa Metropoulos (Secretary), Victoria Bucklin, Michael Boucher (Website and Media), Michael Kelley, Johan Selmer-Larsen, and Fr Scott Ceraphim Mitchell (as Attached Priest). We are honored by the size and the quality of our new Council and will plan on Monthly Meetings Starting with our next meeting on Sunday December 11th after Services.

We are awaiting an answer from the Catholic Church regarding our request to hold regular services in one of the Bangor area buildings not intensively used at this time. We expect an affirmative response, but must pray the God guide us in finding more appropriate housing for the Church Services. We should also be in prayer for a permanent home of our own, in the Lord’s time!

Prayer requests-  Please remember the following in your personal prayer both Orthodox and Non-Orthodox included. (Place names on the prayer sheet for inclusion herein)

For Health and Salvation: Erin Farrar, Andrea Adams, Mrs Whitehouse, Mr Scott, Claudia Pita, Melvin, Andre, Karen, Laurence, Rebecca, Sean, Deb, Dale, Richard, Jacob Victor (Newborn), Michael, Victoria, Angelina, Alma.

For Repose and God’s mercy: Robin Ball, Tatiana, Innocent, Alice, Richard.

For Consideration: We are now a fully functional Mission Parish of the Orthodox Church in America and need to seriously consider our place in the Body of Christ, both as individuals and as a Church. Each of us has particular gifts and talents given by God to be used for His glory in this place, at this time. Pray and ask the Lord to reveal His plan for you so that we may truly begin to raise up the name of Jesus Christ in a manner befitting God, and according to all the grace that has been given to each of us. We are called to serve and to worship and to pray—to be the salt of the earth. May we arise as a sweet fragrance to our wonderful state of Maine and to all its people. Let us commend each other and all our lives unto Christ our God!!

Orthodox Teaching of the Month

We fast before the Great Feast of the Nativity in order to prepare ourselves for the celebration of Our Lord’s birth. As in the case of Great Lent, the Nativity Fast is one of preparation, during which we focus on the coming of the Savior by fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.

By fasting, we “shift our focus” from ourselves to others, spending less time worrying about what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, and so on in order to use our time in increased prayer and caring for the poor. We learn through fasting that we can gain control over things which we sometimes allow to control us—and for many people, food is a controlling factor.
[We live in the only society in which an entire TV network is devoted to food!] While fasting from food, however, we are also challenged to fast from sin, from gossip, from jealousy, from anger, and from those other things which, while well within our control, we all too often allow to control us.

Just as we would refrain from eating a lot before going to an expensive restaurant for dinner—if we “ruin our appetite” we will enjoy the restaurant less—so too we fast before the Nativity in order to more fully feast and celebrate on the Nativity itself.

During the Nativity Fast, we are called upon to refrain from meat, dairy, fish, wine, and olive oil. At the same time, we are challenged, within this framework, to fast to the best of our ability, and to do so consistently.
If we must modify the extent to which we fast within this framework, it is of course possible, but in every instance our fasting should be consistent and regular, for Christ does not see fasting as an option, but as a “must.”
In Matthew Christ says, “WHEN you fast, do not be like the hypocrites,” not “IF you fast” or “IF YOU CHOOSE to fast.”

Finally, it seems quite odd that in our society—a society in which people gladly and freely spend huge sums of money for diets, most of which recommend that one refrain from red meats and dairy products—fasting is not more widely embraced. How odd that a Jenny Craig consultant or diet guru or physician will tell us to refrain from eating meat or cheese or butter and we will gladly embrace—and pay large sums of money for—his or her advice, while when the Church offers the same advice [at “no cost”] we tend to balk, as if we were being asked to do the impossible.

Orthodox Christian Holy Week & Pascha - 03/27/15

Twelve weeks of preparation precede the “feast of feasts.” A long journey which includes five prelenten Sundays, six weeks of Great Lent and finally Holy Week is made. The journey moves from the self-willed exile of the prodigal son to the grace-filled entrance into the new Jerusalem, coming down as a bride beautifully adorned for her husband (Rev. 21:2) Repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and study are the means by which this long journey is made.

Church New Year - 08/30/13

Commemorated on September 1
The first day of the Church New Year is also called the beginning of the Indiction. The term Indiction comes from a Latin word meaning, “to impose.” It was originally applied to the imposition of taxes in Egypt. The first worldwide Indiction was in 312 when the Emperor Constantine (May 21) saw a miraculous vision of the Cross in the sky. Before the introduction of the Julian calendar, Rome began the New Year on September 1.
According to Holy Tradition, Christ entered the synagogue on September 1 to announce His mission to mankind (Luke 4:16-22). Quoting Isaiah 61:1-2), the Savior proclaimed, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to proclaim release to captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord...” This scene is depicted in a Vatican manuscript (Vatican, Biblioteca. Cod. Gr. 1613, p.1).
Tradition says that the Hebrews entered the Promised Land in September.

Fr. John Pawelchak notes*****

Our Most Beloved Friend, Holly Meade, passed to Christ at Abraham's Bosom this past Friday night. She prayed with us and lived in God's presence daily. She is sorely missed but we know that her heart and soul are where the Saints dwell and Christ's face shines. A remarkable artist with an eye for the works and energy of God, she is in Paradise painting with the lights of God's palette of love and creating.

                                        May Holly's Memory Be Eternal!

***** For the summer, we are having Saturday Vespers in Old Town at 5 pm.  We desire to build up the Body of Christ in metropolitan Bangor, including Liturgies on the first and third Sunday of every month.

***** Services in Brunswick are on hiatus until the latter part of August.

***** During the Summer months our Church continues to be responsible for its fiscal obligations; rent is $750, $800 monthly allowance for me to drive up weekly. We currently have less than $200 in the checking account. I ask everyone to continue to send their monthly pledge or to donate to the Church even if you miss a Sunday Liturgy.  I do not like reminding our Church of this issue, but reality dictates that our spiritual family has bills to pay.  Please give as a good and faithful steward, as God has blessed you to be able to. There is no superfluity in our budget or expenses. Please  pray on this and if you wish to mail a donation to the Church, it can be addressed to Christ the Savior Church, c/o Scott Mitchell at 106-7 Cedar Breeze South, Glenburn, Me. 04401, Thankyou! Pentecost 2013 - 06/20/13

His Eminence, Archbishop Nikon of Boston, the Albanian Archdioces & the Diocese of New England.

Very Rev. John J. Kreta, Chancellor, DONE, Pastor of All Saints of America (Ct.) and Christ the Savior Churdch in Me.  fjkreta@snet.net 508-963-9709

Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ. Happy Feast Day and Birthday of the Church Universal, Pentecost.

At the direction of  Fr. John Kreta, I am scheduling Vespers in Old Town with Litya for Sat. 6/22, 5pm.

Attached you will find music for your familiarization with the services for Ves., Liturgy & Ves. of Pentecost.  The choir will do what they have prepared but this again is for you to get an idea of the texts that are sung on these Holy Days.

Sunday, 6/23, Pentecost Divine Liturgy 10 am followed by Vespers of Pentecost with kneeling prayers.

*** I am asking for those who can travel to Old Town, at least for Liturgy, to do so.  We all travel to Bangor for Drs. visits or shopping or the bus or airport.  We need to make a sacrifice for God and the Church at least once a month. The people from Bangor, Richmond, west of Belfast and other towns have attended Deer Isle religiously.  (ex. Holy Week and Pascha).  We need to reciprocate in action and prayer. We cannot survive, let alone doing God's work "their proclamation has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the end of the universe". I ask you as the attending supply priest to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit and attend Bangor at least once a month. This in turn will feed the enthusiasm of Banor and oterh places to attend Deer Isle at least once a month.  I also ask the Church Council to schedule a meeting and everyone attend befor you all start going on vacation in July. Fr. Kreta wants to see the minutes from that meeting.

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church, when the Holy Spirit initiated and made alive in Christ the Apostolic Chruch. Our Church is no less apostolic, universal and commissioned to preach the Word and Kingdom of God. Let this feast day be truly the rebirth of this Mission Church, for God's glory and our salvation.  fjp

Christ the Savior Mission Church; Feast of the Ascension of Christ. - 06/12/13

Your Eminence, Archbishop Nikon of Boston, the Albanian Archdiocese & the Diocese of New England.

V. Rev. John Kreta, Chancellor, DONE, Pastor of All Saints of N. America & Christ the Savior Mission, Me.

           fjkreta@snet.net  508-963-9709

Eve of Ascension, June 12, Introit, "God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet!"

Attached above are the Troparion and Kontakion for Ascension to be sung Saturday at Vespers (5 pm in Old Town Chapel) and Sunday at Divine Liturgy (10 am at Deer Isle Chapel) with Fr. John Kreta serving.

Fr. John Kreta, Chancellor and Pastor, is coming to Maine this weekend to meet the Members of Christ the Savior Mission Church. He is acutely aware of the sacrifice made by all of you to attend, to support and to pray to God on behalf of the Mission Church.  We have Chapels in Metropolitan Bangor, Deer isle and we serve monthly in Brunswick. Our reason for existence is the call by God to everyone to follow Him, united in the Body of Christ and dedicated to Christ.  The Holy Spirit caused the initial Birth of the Church on the First Pentecost, so now it leads, guides, disciplines and comforts us in the Birth of Christ the Savior Church.

When we participate in the Eucharist, Holy Communion, we receive Christ into all of our being. We are united each to God. Also, we are united to one another in God. Confession or repentance removes the long standing conditions, judgments and anger we carry in our hearts.  God leads all of us to repentance through enduring the short comings of each other and then reaching to higher, forgiving love.  Free of anger, resentment or judgment, we can truly (without inner conflict) be fully united to God and to each other.  Our Church , as well as each of us, is called by God to go beyond our personal issues and to sacrifice our pain or anger to God in trade for the Kingdom of God, Paradise. We experience Paradise, the Lord's Holy Supper and Marriage Banquet of Love and Joy, each time we worship in the Liturgy and other services.  I pray that we all forgive each other our short comings, sins and truly receive full repentance  from God and be filled with the Eternal Life in Christ.

***  There has been some Confusion pertaining to the time and place of services and our participation. Vespers is in Old Town Chapel on Saturday at 5 pm.  Divine Liturgy is in Deer Isle at the Parish House Chapel at 10 am.  there will be a pot luck meal after Divine Liturgy on Sunday for fellowship with Fr. Kreta and each other. I ask anyone who is coming to Liturgy to call Mary Schirmer at 207-359-3384 and tell her what you can bring to the meal.  Our Choir for both services will be defined by those who come, so again plan on the Festal Divine Liturgy for Ascension with the Troparion and Kontakion above.

I pray God lead, heal and move to growth for His Glory and our salvation each of us. Come Lord Jesus!

                                                                                                        Fr. John Pawelchak

Commentary from Fr. John Pawelchak***

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Christ is Risen!

This  greeting of "Christ is Risen" is the being written by me to you for the last time for 2013. The Feast of the Lord's Ascension is on Thursday, June 13. Fr. Kreta will celebrate the afterfeast while serving Vespers in Old Town at 5 pm and Liturgy in Deer Isle at 10 am. We will be preparing for Holy Pentecost, June 23 the Birthday of the Apostolic Church  through the descent, gift and our receiving of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Kreta will be in Old Town and Deer Isle to meet all of you, the members of Christ the Savior Mission Church and our extended friends and community. It will be an opportunity to talk with him about the path and choices set before this Body of Christ.

When I was ordained to the Priesthood over 34 years ago, I was given by the Archbishop the Consecrated Lamb of God from the Discos and held the Body of our Lord for what seemed an eternity. I was told that as I have received  Christ holy and pure, I must also return this Holy Sacrifice, our Lord Jesus Christ, holy and pure at the end of my life.  Likewise, priests must  protect, nurture  and present  the Body of Christ, His Bride the Church, holy, intact and thriving. You and all the people we have ever served are the Talents which the Master has given us to guard, cultivate, nurture, invest and pray to increase.

My concern in the two years serving you as a Supply Priest has been for the repentance from sin, the salvation of souls and the preaching of the Word of God to all people. We have worked to care for the local needs of Orthodox in Old Town, Deer Isle and Brunswick, along with other towns in Maine in which our people live. We cannot exist in simply attending to paroichial need. We have to see ourselves as the larger Church of Christ the Savior. The growth of the Church entails sacrifice from the priest and everyone.

I ask you to commit to this Body of Christ established by the Blood of our Savior and Sealed for sanctification in His Holy Resurrection. May our Church grow and be the light on a stand, all of you inviting and loving Icons of Christ to every seeking soul.

Christ is Risen!   Fr. John Pawelchak

*** Brothers and Sisters in Christ, please note that there have been adjustments to the service schedule for March in order to add services for the first week of Lent and to accommodate some unforeseen needs of our parishioners.  We are doing the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete on Monday and Tuesday, March 18 and 19 and Presanctified Liturgy on Wednesday, March 20.  Please also note that Forgiveness Vespers will be held in Deer Isle, this Sunday after Liturgy, March 10.  I ask everyone to participate in this Forgiveness Vespers; It is critical for the healing and spiritual growth of each of us and the Body of Christ at large through forgiveness and reconciliation.  I ask in anticipation your forgiveness for my failure to reach out, understand or to minister to you. God Bless Your, fjp

Saturday, March 9, 2013, Vespers 4 pm. Deer Isle Parish House
Meatfare Sunday, March 10, Divine Liturgy 10 am Deer Isle  Anticipatory Forgiveness Vespers after Lit. Brunch
We are celebrating the initiatory Forgiveness Vespers with the Rite of Forgiveness to begin Lent. Our Church community needs to seek forgiveness from each other in order to grow in repentance, holiness and spiritually toward Christ and His Kingdom.

Cheese or Butterfare Saturday, March 16,  Maslonitsa celebration at East Blue Hill Park from 11 am to 3 pm. All children and parents are invited, as are everyone. there will be bliniy (crepes) to eat, .games and an outside bonfire.  Vespers at 4 pm  at  Deer Isle (changed from Old Town).

Cheesefare Sunday, March 17,  Divine Liturgy at Old Town Chapel 10 am. ***** Forgiveness Vespers at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Bangor, 6 pm. Everyone invited to attend and celebrate together. It is good and God's desire for us to celebrate inter-Orthodox services, to start in Me. the healing of Orthodox Churches and  to promote one American Orthodox Church. We are all Orthodox, Apostolic and Universal, let us witness God's love and support to one another and to the world, through Christ's blessing and the unity of the Holy Spirit.

Monday, March 18, 6 pm. Cannon of St. Andrew of Crete 5:30 pm. Old Town Chapel (Monday and Tuesday Canon combined).  *** It is important to attend the Canon either Monday or Tuesday night to experience the humility of St. Andrew's Canon and to be open to God's grace as He moves us into the journey of healing and restoration, culminating in Pascha.
*****  Great Lent begins on Monday, 3/18. I ask that you try to maintain the Fast, abstaining at least from Meat on Wednesday and Friday, or Monday, Wednesday and Friday if possible. Abstaining from rich food on those days, or in general is good for our spiritual and physical health.  We cut back excessive eating or frivolous activity and direct our prayer to be more consistent, humble and sincere; offering God thanks and interceding for those in need or who are ill. I request that you pray three times daily, saying the "O Heavenly King", the Our Father" and the Theotokion prayer "Rejoice O Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of grace".  Intermittent recitation of the Jesus Prayer ( "Lord Jesus Christ. Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner and save me".10 times daily) will also help us to focus on the Sacrifice of Christ and our being truly humble in His presence.

***Tuesday, March 19, St Andrew, Canon of Crete,  5:30 pm at Deer Isle Parish House. I pray that everyone who can come for one of the First Week of Lent services can avail themselves of this opportunity.

***Wednesday, March 20, 5:30 pm.  Presanctified Liturgy at Deer Isle Parish House followed by Soup and Bread.  I request that you fast from 1 pm on when receiving Holy Communion. If you need for any medical reason (or for  children  or Sr. citizens) to eat or drink before service, that is always encouraged. God wants us to be humble and to care for our bodies and our souls, accepting and knowing our limitations.

***Saturday, March 23,  Memorial Divine Liturgy,  Old Town Chapel 10 am. Commemoration of Departed.
Vespers Old Town 5 pm. (Liturgy will be next day in Deer Isle).

***Sunday, March 24, Sunday of Orthodoxy, Divine Liturgy 10 am. with Children's Procession outside to Bless Water again with Icons. Fast Brunch.

Holy New Martyr Eudoxia Shikova of Puzo said"There is fasting which is not fasting, prayer that is not pray and obedience that is not obedience. If you eat rye bread, eat not only the soft but what you have and not to satiety. Do not fast one day and eat tasty food as a reward the next, such a fast is not pleasing to God. If you pray for people in front of others, but it is not in your soul, it is not prayer. If an obedience is fulfilled that is easy and quick, what merit is that. The obedience that God blesses, and can be boring or hard, or that you do not want to do, that is pleasing to Him."

Christ the Savior Orthodox Mission Church in Maine had Joyful Celebrations of the Lord's Nativity and Theophany - 01/09/13

On December 23, Christ the Savior Mission celebrated Divine Liturgy and its Yolka presentation with the Church School Children.  Our Christmas services were likewise joyous followed by  a parish Holy Supper.  On January 5, we celebrated Divine Liturgy in Brunswick for the community growing up around Bowdoin College. Discussion Group.  We can meet in people's homes for the Adult Ed. if this works better for you; also occasionally for a Church School Project.  I want to focus on the Winter Feasts and coming of Great Lent and preparation for Pascha over the next 5 months.  I deeply appreciate your feedback and any volunteers to help Fr. John teach Church School. I can not underscore enough that  this is one of the highest callings of God and our Church. No one will bear the work alone or 'get stuck' doing it themself; I promise to help. Please pray on this and contact me about blessing your home. In XP  fjp

Mission Update - 08/28/12

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I am writing to remind everyone that we will be gathering  on Sept. 8 and 9 for Divine Liturgy. Saturday, 9/8,  Divine Liturgy will be at the Old Town Chapel at 10 am, (Nativity of the Theotokos).  Divine Liturgy on Sunday, 9/9, will be celebrated on Deer Isle at the Parish House at 10 am.  Following both Liturgies there will be Parish meetings to disseminate Church School Materials for families with children. We will also be discussing and submitting three Saints or Festal Names to His Eminence, Archbishop Nikon, for his consideration and choice of a Mission Parish Name. There will be a group Church School Lesson on Saturday and Sunday, following the Divine Liturgies; it will be on 'Saints of God'; relating to the CS curricula of 'Saints in Times of Trouble'.  Fr. John P. will teach a monthly CS lesson, with families covering  the material and exercise sheets at home weekly.
(Regarding the choice of s Saint or Festal name for the Mission Church.  Several people have already suggested the names of Holy Days and several Saints.  The Archbishop has directed us to choose a name which does not already exist in the Diocese and which will represent the Ministry of our Christian Lives and the Work of this Body of Christ in Maine.)

From Matthew the Poor; "Do you have faith in God?  If you do, then lay it down as a basis for all your behavior. With it, face everything that comes your way, be it joy or grief. Do not allow your faith to change every day according to the vicissitudes of this life.  Do not let success increase your faith in God; neither let failure, loss or illness undermine it."

From fr. John P.   To grow with  God and in Christ, you must put your trust in Him every day through prayer, repentance (changing for the better) and right action. Loving God, our neighbor and with Christ's love ourselves, we grow towards the lives we will lead throughout eternity in His Kingdom.  Let us pray for ourselves, our families, each other and those in our extended communities and throughout the world. God hears every prayer and brings us to Himself in complete love, perfecting our souls here and our whole being in His Kingdom and in Himself.
